Can all sensors get firmware upgrades?

NOTE: This feature is currently in "BETA" phase and not available to all of our customers.

No. Not all sensors in the field can get firmware updates today.

Only SCS-3 sensor (serial numbers c006000 or above) have the possibility of doing remote firmware updates.

We will release firmware updates every once in a while to address support issues, improve performance of the sensors, and to create new sensor feature capabilities!

How to update your firmware

Please read all the instructions below before you start so you understand the whole process. You may find that there are some things you need to do before you begin and perhaps right now is not the best time to try this.

1. Download the latest version of the mobile app

Make sure you have the latest version of the mobile application downloaded on your phone.

NOTE: For the BETA stage please ignore this step! This is how our customers will access the new feature once it's widely released.

2. Turn on Bluetooth, open the app and approach your sensors

  • Make sure your Bluetooth is turned on.
  • Approve any requested permissions for the app to use Bluetooth.
  • If your phone asks to pair with the devices, approve the connection.
  • Walk close to the sensors you intend to update. Remember Bluetooth has a short range.

3. Scan the area for your sensors

When you open the mobile app you should see the option, "Connect to Sensors" (see below).

Select "Connect to sensors." This will prompt the app to start scanning the area for Conserv sensors with Bluetooth capabilities.

  • If your sensors are installed in an area with good cell coverage, you can leave them in-situ for this process.
  • If your sensors are installed in an area with poor cell coverage, you will need to bring them to an area with better coverage.

Once the scan is complete, you should see all of the Bluetooth enabled sensors within range, with a responsive "Signal Strength" icon indicating how good the Bluetooth connectivity is from your phone. If you see no sensors show up on this list, you are too far. Walk closer to to your sensors.

NOTE: If this is the first time you will be updating the firmware on your sensors, it may look like the one in the middle of the image on the left with hyphens instead of information. You may not see the "Firmware version" or the "Serial number."

If this is the case, the best way to determine if you're updating the correct sensor is to evaluate if it's the sensor closest to your phone by seeing if it has the strongest "signal strength" (3 bars).

It is best practice to have all of your sensors running on the latest firmware, so if you happen to update a different sensor than the one you were expecting, that's fine too! You will need to do all of them anyway.

4. Confirm signal strength and update the sensor

Aim to have 3 bars on the signal strength before you select the purple button for "Connect" or "Legacy Update" on the sensor.

  • If the sensor says, "Legacy Update" your sensor is running on older firmware. If you select this and you stay within close range of the sensor it will automatically start updating the sensor.
  • If the sensor says, "Connect," and you select it, it will take you to a screen that will show you several options (see below). If there is a firmware update available, go ahead and select "update firmware."

NOTE: If there is a new version of firmware available to update, you will see the button "UPDATE FIRMWARE" on this screen as indicated by the red arrow.

5. Wait

The firmware update may take a minute or two. The status of the update will show on the screen of the phone. Once it's complete, the sensor will reboot. You'll know the update was successful if you hear the sensor beep and the app has been able to reconnect to the sensor (see below).

The firmware update is complete! You can continue to check for new firmware updates by connecting to your sensors via Bluetooth in the future.

NOTE: If you go back into your mobile app to the "Connect to Sensors" page and the sensor that you updated is missing, it is possible that you updated the firmware of a sensor that was not associated to your account. This may happen if you share a building with or are adjacent to another Conserv customer. More recent firmware updates will exclude sensors that aren't associated with your account. You just did your neighbor a favor!
